Pack a survival kit and carry it on you at all times. Survival kits should contain waterproof matches, a survival knife, a first aid kit, a flare gun and water purifying tablets. These items are important to have in case you get lost. Keep it with you at all times when you leave your campsite for any reason.

Let all the members of your family have a hand in picking your campsite. Engage in conversation about what state and location they would like to visit. Try to keep a small list, as there is such an abundance of spots to choose from, it can be hard to pick one. You could even pick three or four possible destinations and allow a family vote from there.

Before going camping, take a course in first aid, especially if you plan to bring children with you. Camping can be very remote, so it is best to be able to deal with emergencies on your own, until help can be reached. Additional research can also provide valuable information.
